A hearing aid is an electroacoustic body-worn apparatus which typically fits in or behind the wearer's ear, and is designed to amplify and modulate sounds for the wearer. Earlier devices, known as an "ear trumpet" or "ear horn", were passive funnel-like amplification cones designed to gather sound energy and direct it into the ear canal. Similar devices include the bone anchored hearing aid, and cochlear implant.

Randall King, owner of King Hearing, shares the following story:

Laura sat in her car, fuming. She had just been visiting with her friend when her hearing aid began to “chirp.” The device had been working great for the past month and now she was totally frustrated with it. She called my office and asked to come in right away.

At 55, Laura was a new grandmother. She worked in an office with several people and was constantly on the move. She had a number of friends that she socialized with and liked to be involved in all types of philanthropic work. Her hearing had begun to decline when she was 43, and she began to wear hearing aids at 50. Like most people, she had been reluctant to try hearing aids, but had eventually come to depend on them once she noticed that they truly improved her hearing.

There are many things that can make a hearing aid produce “unwanted noise.” I lead Laura back to our counseling room and began to ask a few of questions. The hearing aids had been working great for the past several weeks and this problem had just occurred.

Laura removed her hearing aids and I examined her ear canals. There was a significant accumulation of earwax in both ears. Hearing aids produce amplified sound that must travel through the ear canal to the eardrum and cause the eardrum to aggressively move. If the amplified sound is blocked by earwax, it “bounces” off the wax and is redirected out of the ear canal. This amplified sound then travels back into the hearing aid and is re-amplified to start the trip again. This “loop” of sound causes the hearing aid to saturate with sound and begin to whistle.

Removing the wax and cleaning the hearing aids stopped the whistling and Laura was hearing great again. Her hearing aid problem had been solved.

Hearing aids are like small computers worn on the body. These devices are designed to operate while exposed to the moisture, heat and other elements of your body and the environment. At times, hearing aids need to be cleaned and the sound produced by the small computer chips needs to be re-adjusted to more closely match a person’s hearing needs.

Hearing aids can have volume controls, buttons to change programs, remote control devices, Bluetooth communication, and many other means of making adjustments in order to hear better. An occasional cleaning and adjustments by your professional will make your hearing aids work much better.

A hearing aid specialist is someone that can evaluate the hearing needs of an individual, identify the best hearing aid to fit those needs, and maintain the proper operation of the hearing aids. This personal attention and patience help hearing aid wearers to hear comfortably and minimize problems as they occur.

King Hearing Center is located in Lubbock, where our office has been in the same location since 1984 at 2821 74th St. We have also opened a branch office in Plainview, operated by Gayle Willson. Gayle is a second generation licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist and focuses on providing a personal touch to hearing assistance. Gayle can be reached at Grand Hearing Center in Plainview at (806) 288-8585.

Randall King is owner of King Hearing Center and a Board Certified Hearing instrument specialist. He has worked with hearing loss for more than 24 years. He has tested hearing throughout West Texas, trained several specialists in hearing aid sciences, and fit hundreds of hearing aids. For your personal consultation with Randall, call (806) 745-7878.
