Nominated by fellow co-workers, Mary Ann Silva has raised three children and now is raising her teenage grandson. This past year, Ms. Silva has faced particular family hardships as one son has been diagnosed with cancer and she herself has had health issues that have threatened her livelihood. Despite these challenges, Ms. Silva “still offered help and a kind word to anyone who needed it,” commenter her co-worker. “She has had to work twice as hard because of her hearing issues …but she never complained and always lived life with a smile….”

Jane Whitehouse was nominated due to her ‘giving and caring’ nature. Ms. Whitehouse has also suffered family tragedy this past year. She recently lost her husband of 60 years and has been diagnosed with an illness that requires weekly doctor visits. Her hearing has also been declining in recent years, especially in one ear. Despite these trials, Ms. Whitehouse continues to work even at the age of 81. She works part-time three times a week at a shoe store in Seguin – something she has done for the past 20 years. “Her customers just love her and look forward to seeing her smiling face at the store,” stated her daughter-in-law.
