A hearing aid is an electroacoustic body-worn apparatus which typically fits in or behind the wearer's ear, and is designed to amplify and modulate sounds for the wearer. Earlier devices, known as an "ear trumpet" or "ear horn", were passive funnel-like amplification cones designed to gather sound energy and direct it into the ear canal. Similar devices include the bone anchored hearing aid, and cochlear implant.

Hearing Central LLC (www.HearingAidsCentral.com), a hearing aids manufacturer and seller of hearing aids online, offers free information to help patients better understand what digital hearing aids are, how they work, and how they differ from analog heari

Lake Forest, IL - When it comes to choosing hearing aids, patients have to weigh factors such as hearing aid features and cost. While analog models used to be the only option available, now patients can choose from many types of digital hearing aids as well. A basic question is: are the additional features of digital hearing aids enough to justify purchasing them over analog hearing aids?

“Both analog and digital hearing aids have the same goal," says Phil Wyatt, CEO of Hearing Central LLC. “Each is designed to increase the volume of sounds reaching the ear drum to help the hearing-impaired have an easier time understanding speech. Both types of hearing aids start with a microphone to gather sound waves and convert them into electrical energy. Then an amplifier increases the strength of that electrical energy before a receiver converts it into louder sound waves that the patient can hear. While the processes of both analog and digital hearing aids seem very similar on the surface, the difference is what happens in between. With analog hearing aids, all sounds passing through the hearing aid remain analog, whereas with digital hearing aids, the sounds are converted to digital zeros and ones and pass through a small computer chip where they can be manipulated to enhance the sounds."

One of the biggest differences in how sound is amplified in analog hearing aids versus digital hearing aids is in how they each deal with background noises. While both can amplify quiet sounds while minimizing already-loud sounds to protect what is left of the patient's hearing, analog hearing aids don't differentiate between a conversation nearby and background noise such as the noises in a crowded restaurant. Digital hearing aids are able to analyze bits of data through digital signal processing -- a process that occurs before sounds are converted back into electrical energy and then back into audible sounds. The algorithms involved in this processing allows digital hearing aids to be more customized than analog models, with many designed to automatically decrease steady background noise.
Hearing Central LLC manufactures and sells two digital hearing aid lines through www.HearingAidsCentral.com; the digi-Ear in the ear hearing aids and the Melody open fit hearing aids. Both models meet FDA standards. All hearing aids from Hearing Central LLC include a 12 month manufacturer's warranty. Because the company cuts out the middleman and sells the hearing aids they manufacture directly to consumers, their digital hearing aids can be sold for thousands less than comparable models sold through hearing professionals.
